Veterans Home Care Benefits: What You May Be Entitled To

If you or a loved one served in the United States military, you may be entitled to home care benefits that can significantly offset — or even fully cover — the cost of professional care at home. Yet many veterans and their families never access these benefits simply because they don't know they exist.

This guide covers the primary VA programs that support home care for veterans in Florida.

The VA provides home health care services to eligible veterans who need skilled nursing or therapy services at home. These services are provided directly by VA staff or through contracted community providers and may include:

• Skilled nursing care
• Physical, occupational, and speech therapy
• Home health aide services
• Social work services

Eligibility: Veterans must be enrolled in VA health care and have a medical need for home-based services. A VA physician must order the services.

The Aid and Attendance (A&A) benefit is a pension enhancement available to veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities. It is one of the most valuable and least-known VA benefits available.

Who qualifies:

• Veterans who served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during a wartime period
• Veterans who need help with at least two activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, transferring)
• Veterans who are housebound or in a nursing home
• Surviving spouses of eligible veterans

Benefit amounts (approximate, 2024):

• Veteran alone: up to ~$2,300/month
• Veteran with dependent spouse: up to ~$2,727/month
• Surviving spouse: up to ~$1,478/month

These funds can be used to pay for home care, assisted living, or other care-related expenses.

The Housebound benefit is another pension enhancement for veterans who are substantially confined to their home due to a permanent disability. It provides a smaller monthly benefit than Aid and Attendance but has less stringent eligibility requirements.

Through the VA Community Care Program, eligible veterans can receive care from non-VA providers in their community — including home care agencies — when VA services are not available or accessible.

Applying for VA benefits can be complex. Here are the key steps:

1. Gather documentation: DD-214 (discharge papers), medical records documenting care needs, financial information
2. Contact your local VA regional office or visit VA.gov to begin the application
3. Consider working with a VA-accredited claims agent or Veterans Service Organization (VSO) — they can help navigate the process at no cost

Organizations like the American Legion, VFW, and DAV offer free assistance with VA benefit claims.

Not all home care agencies are set up to work with VA benefits. When evaluating agencies, ask:

• Do you accept VA benefits as payment?
• Are you a VA-contracted provider?
