Most older adults want to remain in their own homes as long as possible — and with the right modifications, many can do so safely. The key is identifying and addressing hazards before an accident occurs.
Use this room-by-room checklist to assess your loved one's home. Check off each item that is already in place, and make a plan to address anything that isn't.
General Home Safety
- All walkways and hallways are clear of clutter, cords, and obstacles
- Flooring is in good repair — no loose boards, torn carpet, or uneven surfaces
- Adequate lighting in all rooms, hallways, and staircases
- Night lights installed between bedroom and bathroom
- Emergency numbers (doctor, pharmacy, family contacts) posted near the phone
- Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors installed and tested
- Fire extinguisher accessible and not expired
- Emergency exit plan established and practiced
Entryways and Stairs
- Steps are in good repair with no loose boards or uneven surfaces
- Handrails on both sides of all staircases, extending the full length
- Outdoor steps and walkways are well-lit
- Non-slip strips on outdoor steps
- Entry area is clear of clutter and easy to navigate
- Consider a ramp if steps are a significant barrier
Living Room and Common Areas
- Furniture arranged to allow clear pathways
- Low coffee tables or ottomans that could be tripped over are repositioned or removed
- Rugs have non-slip backing or are removed
- Electrical cords are secured and out of walkways
- Frequently used items (remote, phone, glasses) are within easy reach
- Chairs and sofas are at a height that makes sitting and standing easy
Kitchen
- Frequently used items stored at waist height — not overhead or on low shelves
- Non-slip mat in front of the sink
- Stove knobs are easy to see and operate
- Automatic stove shut-off device installed if there is a history of forgetting
- Step stool with handrail available if overhead storage is needed
- Adequate lighting over work surfaces
Bathroom
- Grab bars installed beside the toilet and inside the shower/tub
- Non-slip mat inside the shower or tub
- Non-slip bath mat on the floor outside the tub/shower
- Shower chair or bench available if needed
- Handheld showerhead installed
- Water heater set to 120°F or below to prevent scalding
- Nightlight installed for nighttime use
- Medications stored safely and organized
Bedroom
- Bed is at a comfortable height for getting in and out
- Nightlight or lamp within easy reach of the bed
- Phone or medical alert device accessible from the bed
- Clear path from bed to bathroom
- Clothing and frequently used items stored at accessible heights
- Bed rails or transfer handles if needed for getting in and out of bed
Outdoor Areas
- Walkways and driveways are in good repair and free of cracks or uneven surfaces
- Outdoor lighting is adequate
- Steps have handrails and non-slip surfaces
- Garden hoses and tools are stored away from walkways
- Mailbox is accessible without navigating hazardous terrain
Medical Alert and Emergency Preparedness
- Medical alert system (wearable button) in place for seniors who live alone
- Emergency contacts list is current and accessible
- Medications are organized and accessible
- Healthcare provider contact information is posted prominently
- Neighbor or family member has a key and checks in regularly
